22 FAKE vs REAL Beauty of Joseon comparison photos of sunscreen with three fake tubes

When I realized that I bought a fake Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF50 PA+++++, I bought another one. Not because I am wanted another fake, but because I was wondering how many Joseon Relief Sun Rice SPF50 sunscreens sold on Amazon.ca are fake.

In some photos I have two fakes; they also appear in photos containing three fakes. I’ve posted them all here because the lighting varies a bit, and the more comparison photos there are, the better. While all monitor displays are different in terms of contrast and color representation, I’m pretty close to what I see on camera.

You will notice that the two fakes are not the same as the real thing; that’s because fakers selling online don’t really care if the product itself is fake. Why spend money on customization when it reduces their profits? They just need to make salesand I hope you don’t mind asking for a refund.

When I recorded the video below, I only had one fake sunscreen, and it was in the package for the first time buyer to realize it was fake. You can clearly see the difference when they’re together, though (although the video lighting and quality make them look very different in the photos later in this post).

Here’s a small slideshow of photos comparing the real Beauty Joseon sunscreen to the fake one in the video above, and a recap of the difference.

• ✔️ The true beauty color of the Joseon tube is a bright cream shade, with a yellowish undertone.
• ✖️ This fake tube is a cream shade too, but it’s much lower, with a green undertone.
• ✔️ The official tube is made of what I think is coated aluminum, not plastic. (Also, the exact words appear in my email to Refinery 29 UK, but not how they appear in the story.) However, the up the bottom part of the actual tube cap is plastic, which i didn’t mention, so there’s that.
• ✔️ When you press the original tube, it holds the depression.
• ✖️ This dummy tube is all plastic, strong enough, and retracts quickly, with no stress marks.
• ✔️ The opening of the original tube is small, and it was tightly sealed with foil.
• ✖️ This fake tube opening is bigger, and the foil seal slipped when I removed the cap.
• ✔️ The expiration date on the original tube reads “EXP” and the date.
• ✖️ This fake tube reads “XP”- and a date.
• ✔️ The real beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF 50 formula is its silky, soft cream shade and texture.
• ✖️ This fake Joseon beauty is more liquid, pure white.

As I said earlier, I took these photos before the arrival of the third fake Beauty of Joseon sunscreen; put them together anyway because why not?

This slideshow ticks the boxes, because while most fakers don’t care how accurate they are – again, the goal is to make the first sale to get your money – you might know what’s in there. I included TWO authentic boxes because there are slight color differences that can occur with different prints. And although I have three fakes, two of them look completely different and are probably distributed by the same supplier because the boxes are the same.

Note: current boxes from Beauty of Joseon have a QR code; The authentic boxes I have are old and have not. However, the FAKE boxes in the following slideshow DO have QR codes that lead to the defunct Ali Express page.

HOW MANY FAKE SUNSCREENS ARE THERE?

The beauty of Joseon’s Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF 50 are not the only fake sunscreens, and these are probably not the only versions of this floating around. Round Lab and Isntree, also Korean skincare brands, also seem to be facing a counterfeiting problem.

Fake sunscreen has become a big enough problem that retailers like StyleKorean are posting infographics on how to tell if your sunscreen is real or not:

Unfortunately where Joseon Beauty is concerned, and possibly others too, there are quite a few fakes with variations in packaging and manufacturing details. Comparisons like this, even pictures, can be very helpful.

Also, some sunscreen supplements may not be fake, but “fakes” or sunscreens that don’t work – the Refinery 29 UK post in which I was quoted includes cosmetic scientist and inventor Dr. Julian Sass and his investigation into the “allegedly fake” SPF 45 formula sold by the brand on the label. Not the same thing as scammers ripping off genuine products for cheap, but still a scam, and bad for your skin (and wallet).

Counterfeiting is big business in every market, from designer clothes to prescription and non-prescription drugs, to skin care and cosmetics, and yes, sunscreen. The best way to avoid anything fake online is to make your first purchase directly from the brand’s website so you know what the real thing looks, feels and smells like before buying it elsewhere. And make sure the “elsewhere” is an authorized dealer.

If you somehow find a fake though (sometimes it happens even with an authorized seller), make sure you get your money immediately. (Post about that to come.)
