Getting scammed for fake skin care is so easy online – it’s happened to me! Here’s what I learned from the experience so you don’t make the same mistake.
For years we have heard about fake beauty products on certain e-commerce websites, but I had never encountered such things myself until I decided that I really needed to try sunscreen that can be sold in Canada.
I am generally very satisfied with the skin care available here. Ordering from outside of Canada is expensive when you consider currency conversion and import taxes, never mind the eco-footprint involved – and the inability to try out the makeup before you buy. But I had seen so much love for this Joseon Beauty SPF 50 PA++++ Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics on Instagram that I needed to try it.
I placed an order on StyleKorean.com, a website that specializes in Korean skin care, makeup, pop and more. Then I saw Beauty of Joseon sunscreen on Amazon.ca and thought, “Hey! It’s amazing! And at such a great price… I’ve heard of fakes being sold by third party sellers on Amazon, but who can fake sunscreen??”
So I put the three packs in my cart and checked.

I BOUGHT A SUN SCREEN — PHU
Fraudsters. Fraudsters can completely fake sunscreen — heck, they’re inventing life-saving medications too, apparently — and the fraudsters will sell them on Amazon through third-party accounts.
Luckily, I filmed myself trying out the sunscreen from Amazon and posted it on Instagram and TikTok (where it has over 2.6 million views), so there’s that.

In the year since I posted these videos, it seems that people still need to know not trying to buy Beauty of Joseon sunscreen on Amazon.ca or on Amazon.com. In their best Instagram stories, the brand makes it clear that because their sunscreens aren’t FDA (or Health Canada) approved that is. they don’t allow their sunscreens to be sold on Amazon in North America.
And now if you search for “Beauty of Joseon sunscreen” on Amazon, you should never find Help Sun (there were loads when I bought mine). That said, I he did find the Beauty of Joseon Sunstick SPF 50 that I would like not buying advice.
Others skin care for Joseon’s Beauty, however, is something available through the official Amazon.com storefront (owned by StyleKorean). But NOT THEIR IDEA.

HOW TO AVOID CLAY SKINCARE ONLINE
The easiest way to avoid buying fake or counterfeit sunscreen or skincare online is to buy directly from the brand website if you are not familiar with the products. It may cost a little more if shipping is involved, but it will be worth it to be authentic. You need to know the actual packaging, texture, smell and feel of the formulas.
HOT TIP: if the price is much lower than other sites or seems really cheap, AVOID!
After your first purchase on the product website, then you can try to buy from a seller recommended by the company. For example, here is Beauty of Joseon’s list of authorized sellers worldwide, including online sellers. (Also, note: while some of them skin care accessible from local store fronts and websites such as walmart.ca, their sunscreens not. However, StyleKorean.com is the official beauty of Joseon SUNSCREEN retailer; preferably if you live in the US. If you’re in Canada, Stylevana.com is the best source for sunscreen.)
Also, with Instagram or TikTok you can shoot most of the products a direct message to ask questions about where you bought – and that the website you just bought from has authorized information. (Instagram allows you to attach photos.)

And if you happen to find yourself shopping on Amazon for skincare (yes, it can be done safely), you need to pay close attention to who the real seller is, regardless of the brand. TLDR: HOW TO AVOID FAKE SKINCARE RECAPS ONLINE
While buying legitimate skincare online can be tricky if the brand you’re looking for isn’t readily available at local retailers, it can be done safely with these guidelines:
1) Buy from the brand’s website if you are new to the products
2) Once you are familiar with the product packaging, texture and feel (or you have some money left from the first purchase to compare), if the website that sells many products offers convenience, easy or inexpensive shipping, or good sales in general, check to see if that site is on the product list of authorized e-sellers.
3) If the price on another website is too good to be true… yeah, you know. No.
4) If you think you have been forgotten and want answers, you can send multiple messages on social media. Instagram allows you to post photos.
