Skin Product Review Part 1

Moisturizers – Body

  1. Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion – 4/10 – It only gives a passing flow of water that disappears within minutes, although the subtle oatmeal smell gives an unpleasant comfort.
  2. Amlactin Daily – 3/10 – Often recommended for keratosis pilaris (KP), but despite the same effectiveness, it failed to bring about any visible improvement in skin texture or bumps.
  3. GoldBond Retinol Overnight – 7/10 – Effectively reduces the appearance of crepey skin on hands with consistent use, leaving them visibly smoother with minimal irritation.
  4. La Roche-Posay Triple Lipid Recovery – 2/10 – Despite its cult following and glowing online reviews, this caused severe reactions including a burning rash on my face and a horrible rash on my friend’s arms and legs.
  5. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream – 9/10 – A real winter savior that quickly soothes dry, irritated skin with its rich but non-greasy formula that absorbs well without leaving any residue.
  6. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream with 5% Urea. – 7/10 – Shows measurable improvement in KP bumps with regular use, smoothing rough patches thanks to its combination of mild exfoliating urea and moisturizing ceramides.

Moisturizers for the face

  1. Avene Cicalfate+ – 2/10 – Big disappointment when I needed it most during a brutal Midwest winter. The formula is completely separated inside the package, releasing a watery liquid or thick cream inconsistently. I quickly abandoned it despite my continued search for a soothing night cream that repairs without causing breakouts.
  2. Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer – 9/10 – I purposely chose the tube version over the pump to minimize the mess that my acne-prone skin might cause. This gentle formula actually improved my complexion over time, giving a subtle but noticeable glow while keeping my skin glowing. A real foundation that delivers amazing results without unnecessary additives.
  3. ROC Barrier Renew – 7/10 – This lightweight gel-cream has earned repeat purchases thanks to its gentle, fragrance-free formula that provides comfortable hydration even in harsh winter conditions without skin sensitivity issues.
  4. Embryolisse Lait Creme – 7/10 – Initially hesitant about its scent and rich consistency, I was pleasantly surprised that it brought great comfort without causing breakouts. Although it didn’t improve the condition of my skin, it successfully prevented the dreaded winter flaking and dryness.
  5. Derma Skin Renew Barrier Repair – 6/10 – A fragrance-free option that plays it safe—it won’t cause breakouts but it doesn’t provide the deep, lasting hydration my skin craves during the dry months.
  6. It’s about Dew Point – 8/10 – This stalwart consistently soothes and calms my skin without triggering a single breakout, prompting me to stock up on three more tubes—end product vindication.
  7. Haldi and Hyaluronic Acid Oil Free Moisturizer – 8/10 – My trusty solution for those challenging days when my skin breaks out at the same time but is extremely dry, it provides gentle but effective hydration without exacerbating acne.
  8. La Roche-Posay Double Repair with SPF 30 – 8/10 – Remains my daytime foundation following application of CE Ferulic, combining sun and moisture protection well. Although it leaves a strong finish that can appear shiny, this doesn’t bother me on most days.
  9. Haldi and Hyaluronic Acid Sleeping Mask – 10/10 – My ultimate nighttime indulgence when I crave both luxury and performance, delivering intense moisture while calming breakouts—a truly rare combination that earns my highest recommendation.

Serums & Treatments

  1. PanOxyl – 8/10 – Significantly reduces pore size and effectively treats occasional facial breakouts while proving particularly useful for body acne on the back and buttocks. While it does cause some peeling on my nose, it’s not as effective at exfoliating as dedicated BHA/AHA toners.
  2. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo – 8/10 – It works with remarkable reliability to reduce my monthly hormonal breakouts, quickly reducing both the size and inflammation of small bumps before they become major problems.
  3. Normal Glycolic Acid – 7/10 – A surprisingly affordable multitasker that delivers modest improvement in underarm discoloration and keratosis pilaris, making it well worth it despite its subtle side effects.
  4. ANUA Niacinamide – 2/10 – Despite the targeted action on the chin and forehead for discoloration, this caused excessive peeling without bringing about a noticeable improvement in hyperpigmentation, making it a definite skip.
  5. Kiehl’s Dark Spot Corrector – 5/10 – It falls squarely in the middle—gentle enough to not cause irritation or flaking but didn’t show significant improvement on dark areas with moderate use.
  6. SkinCeuticals B5 Hydrating Gel – 5/10 – Gives a nice, cool feeling when applying but seems to require complementary products to deliver meaningful results, making it hard to justify its premium price point.
  7. Rael Miracle Patches – 8/10 – These luminous hydrocolloid patches have saved my professional appearance many times, successfully hiding angry spots during important working days.
  8. Tretinoin 0.025% – 5/10 – After two years of consistent use, the results are disappointingly subtle, with fine lines appearing on my forehead making me question its anti-aging claims. Can I increase the torture level?
  9. ROC Correxion – 2/10 – Purchased as a mild alternative to tretinoin overnight, but produced absolutely no visible improvement, making it a complete waste of money.
  10. Dark Angels Exfoliator – 7/10 – It consistently delivers on its pore-refining promises with a satisfying deep cleanse that leaves skin noticeably smoother without causing irritation.
  11. Glow Recipe Watermelon AHA/BHA Toner – 7/10 – Provides enough pore-minimizing results with pleasant sensations, although it does not have enough power for dramatic transformation.
  12. Naturium Quadruple Hyaluronic Acid – 1/10 – Caused severe facial peeling despite being careful "sandwiching" among other products and many techniques—a complete disaster for my skin’s prevention.
  13. TruSkin Vitamin C Serum – 2/10 – A very disappointing attempt at a budget-friendly SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic formula that delivers none of the promised radiance or texture improvement.
  14. Vitamin C by Dr. Brenner – 4/10 – Although more effective than other cheats, it still falls short of expectations and still doesn’t justify its price.
  15. Minimalist Vitamin C – 3/10 – Another forgettable attempt at vitamin C with no noticeable improvement in skin tone, texture, or radiance despite consistent use.
  16. SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic – 9/10 – Currently on my fourth bottle of this splurge-worthy serum that always delivers a natural glow and softness unlike any other product. Although each bottle lasts about six months (making it cost effective), it doesn’t significantly improve hyperpigmentation or pore appearance despite its other benefits.
  17. Origin GinZing – 2/10 – Despite the attractive marketing and fragrance, this produced no visible improvement in skin tone, texture, or radiance, making it a complete waste of money.

Sunscreens

  1. Aveeno SPF 60 – 8/10 – A reliable budget-friendly option that offers excellent protection without irritation, making it suitable for everyday use where cost savings are paramount.
  2. Aqua New – 2/10 – Despite its attractive marketing, the very sticky texture creates an uncomfortable feeling that lasts throughout the day, making it almost impossible to wear comfortably.
  3. UV Doux Silicone Sunscreen – 9/10 – My absolute favorite with its silicone-based formula that creates a smooth, dewy finish while providing strong protection without any greasy residue or white cast.
  4. Supergoop Play – 6/10 – While thankfully it doesn’t break out on my acne-prone skin, the sheer consistency makes it less than ideal for everyday wear, especially under makeup.
  5. Supergoop Mineral Dusting Powder – 9/10 – This smart product has saved countless mornings by quickly fixing sticky sunscreen and reducing glare before heading to work, making it worth every penny.
  6. Dr. Ceramide Seth and Vitamin C – 7/10 – A lightweight formula that doesn’t cause breakouts while providing decent protection, although it doesn’t have any standout qualities to set it apart.
  7. Live Tinted – 1/10 – Misleading "there are no whites" the marketing claim makes this product particularly irritating, as it leaves a transparent white layer on the skin that is impossible to blend out regardless of the technique used.
  8. UV Doux Lotion – 7/10 – A reliable option with consistent protection, but the sticky coating makes it less pleasant to wear than its silicone counterpart from the same brand.
  9. People’s Daily Light Oil – 7/10 – This luminous SPF oil creates a beautiful sun-kissed glow that is especially flattering during beach holidays, with amazing longevity from one bottle.
  10. Conscious Chemist SPF 30 + Vitamin C – 4/10 – A weak combination product that provides basic sun protection but fails to live up to its glowing vitamin C promises, making it hard to justify a repurchase.
