This was their lowest three-point percentage in a game this season. It’s a make or miss league. The best teams are those who make the highest percentage of threes. Their inconsistent outside shooting is part of the reason why the results are the way they are.

It was the fourth time Cleveland shot 25% or worse from beyond the arc. They lost four times when they did that. Last season, the Cavs only shot 25% or better three times.

The Cavs’ eight three-pointers tied for the fewest in a game this season. Part of this is due to their poor shooting, and the other part is due to their lack of effort. The Cavs were in the 25th percentile for three-point attempts on Monday. Shooting with a few threes has been a recent trend. They are 12th in three-point attempts since December 13th and 18th in January. This comes after leading the league in scoring attempts early in the season. The Cavs didn’t need to try more three-pointers on Monday, considering how badly they were shooting them. However, it is alarming how far the pendulum has swung in the other direction. I’m not sure who this group is on a night like this.

The Thunder outscored the Cavs by 45 points in three. It doesn’t matter how good you are in other areas. There is no winning more than this many from three. The Thunder shot very well from deep as they connected on 23 of their 47 attempts (48.9%).

The poor shooting was compounded by an inability to finish inside as the Cavs converted just 47.2% of their shots at the rim (3rd percentile).. The Cavs did everything they could to get to the line. They went 17-36 on shots from the field (90th percentile of attempts). But that doesn’t mean anything if you can’t get anything to fall. The Thunder were able to pack the paint because of how much Cleveland was shooting from three. They couldn’t establish any kind of offensive flow.

Oklahoma City registered a 130.7 half court offensive rating (99th percentile). The Thunder played very well in the midfield. They swing the ball to the open man and trust their attack. The Cavs dared players like Lu Dort to beat them with their outside shot, and they did.

The Cavs answered 21 times. This resulted in Oklahoma City scoring 23 points off turnovers compared to Cleveland’s eight.

Cleveland outscored Oklahoma City 22-5 in second-chance points. The Cavs had 24 second chances to the Thunder’s four. The Cavaliers did this without allowing the Thunder to get into transition, as Oklahoma City was in the 9th percentile in transition points off live offensive rebounds. This is the only area of the game where the Cavs have won.

Cleveland’s 24-man first team was outscored by 12 points in just over 10 minutes to play.. The Cavs went with the first team of Donovan Mitchell, Jaylon Tyson, Dean Wade, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. That team struggles to get anything going offensively due to poor ball handling. They also didn’t do enough defense to make it work. I understand and agree with the thinking of this group. It didn’t work.

The Cavs are 2-8 when Mitchell scores 21 or fewer points in a game.. The Cavs are gone as Mitchell looks to score this season. If he scores more than 35 points, he usually wins. If he scores 21 points or less, he almost always loses.

Mitchell shot just 27.8% from the field.
