Novak Djokovic marked his 100th Australian Open victory in his opening match of the 2026 tournament on Monday, but reaching a quarter of a century of Grand Slam titles remains his most coveted figure.<\/p>\n

Djokovic’s 25-year quest, which would have broken his relationship with Margaret Court to achieve the record, has been a concern for the past two years – and on this evidence, the 38-year-old may just hit that magic number.<\/p>\n

“Being the boss is a great feeling,” Djokovic said on court after disposing of Spain’s Pedro Martinez – ranked 71st in the world – in straight sets.<\/p>\n

“I always do my best whenever I’m on the court. Making history is a big motivation – and especially in the last five, 10 years of my career.”<\/p>\n

Djokovic’s 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory was achieved, crucially, in exactly two hours on court. Importantly because a 100% fit and fully rested Djokovic is still the best player in the world, even at his age and against the young bulls Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz who have dominated the men’s game in recent times.<\/p>\n

Djokovic admitted ahead of the tournament that he doesn’t have “a little juice” when it comes to competing against the world’s best, before adding: “When I’m fit, when I can put all the pieces of the puzzle together on a given day, I feel like I can beat anybody.”<\/p>\n

Djokovic’s problem is that it rarely happens when he faces these two later. Confronting deep in tournaments, he was still a little short in the tank and was dropped for a minor argument.<\/p>\n

Since winning the 2023 US Open for victory number 24, Djokovic’s run at four majors has been ended by Sinner or Alcaraz five of eight times, with the player injured on two other occasions – and four of those victories have come in succession.<\/p>\n

Djokovic’s one time coming out on top, in a major quarter-final with Alzaraz in Melbourne last year, a necessary trip led to a single injury withdrawal in his subsequent semi-final against Alexander Zverev.<\/p>\n

“It’s always nice at the beginning of a tournament,” Djokovic explained to his body after his victory over Martinez. “Let’s see how I improve.<\/p>\n

“Tonight’s game was really good. I have nothing to complain about; I worked very well.”<\/p>\n

‘Phenomenal’ Djokovic serves to send a message to his opponents<\/h2>\n

Djokovic’s performance is key to him being able to manage his minutes and maintain his health in the final round in Melbourne, with his match against Martinez his first competitive action since early November due to various issues that ended his 2025 season earlier.<\/p>\n

He certainly provided a template to follow: across 13 service games, Djokovic dropped just five points, winning 41 of 44 first serves in a dominant display that included 14 aces as he quickly dispelled any concerns over form or fitness.<\/p>\n

“It was great for Djokovic,” said former British No 1 Tim Henman TNT Sports<\/em>.<\/p>\n

“You’re looking to build a rhythm throughout your match in the first round of a Grand Slam – and Novak hasn’t played for a long time – but he came out, hit his spots and was able to tell if the ball was back.<\/p>\n

“It’s been a solid foundation for her to build on. Her first serve percentage was in the high 80s in the first two sets, and her first winning points were in the high 90s.<\/p>\n

“Martinez did not look at how Djokovic worked. And if he is going to go to the final stage of the tournament, it is important that he continues to work – as it saves energy and gives him more freedom in his return games.<\/p>\n

“If you were to give Djokovic a chance to script his first round match, this would be it. It was an absolute night’s work.”<\/p>\n

And it was a complete night’s work that the Serb hoped his opponents were watching, with Sinner in his part of the draw and a potential semi-final opponent, before Alcaraz stood in No 25’s way in a potential final.<\/p>\n

“It’s always a challenge to start the tournament in the right way, to send the right signal not only to yourself but to all your opponents watching you play,” added Djokovic.<\/p>\n

“Now I have a few days out of the game to recover my body. I use every hour to prepare my body for the next challenge. Let’s hope for the best.<\/p>\n

“I’m blessed to be playing at this level and to win again tonight is a dream come true.”<\/p>\n
