One of the many changes in the program this year was the removal of positions from the ballot, and the guard group in Mpumalanga was very strong as the power forward Jayson Tatum was sidelined. The voters could have removed the tallest players from the roster out of tradition, but they wisely chose against it. — Kevin Pelton

What did the voters do?

It’s hard to complain about Stephen Curry being voted the starter. He’s undoubtedly an All-Star and earned the right to start for the sixth year in a row, but so did Anthony Edwards, who got my media vote. Edwards is averaging a career high 29.6 PPG and has matched Curry in terms of efficiency this season.

I also voted for Donovan Mitchell in the East, where he probably got a little credit because the Cleveland Cavaliers have been disappointing this season. That’s not because of Mitchell, who is playing as well as ever. Still, both Edwards and Mitchell will make the All-Star game and could end up starting with the Americans split into two teams, so these are more arguments than real issues. – Pelton

Which international duo are you most excited to see perform together?

Antetokounmpo and Victor Wembanyama. Giannis is such a unique combination of size and explosiveness that everyone calls him the Greek Freak…but when he stands next to Wemby, he looks like a guard. Seeing Freak and Alien together in an All-Star format, I expect to see dunks from every angle. Of course, Wemby also has one of the best shooting strokes in the league, so Giannis breaking down the defense and hitting the big man with a 3-pointer should be good too.

And on defense, if they choose to play anywhere, the rim protection could be amazing. Styles puts up a fight, but Giannis and Wemby are both very competitive, and if they clash, it could lead to All-Star magic. — Andre Snellings

<picture></picture>
Last year Victor Wembanyama was selected as an All-Star reserve in his second season, becoming the youngest player in the history of the San Antonio Spurs. (Photos by Sharon Chi/NBAE via Getty Images)

Which American duo are you most excited to see perform together?

Curry and Tyrese Maxey. Once the full roster is announced, I might trade Maxey for Anthony Edwards, but the combination of Curry’s endless range and Maxey’s blazing speed with the ball could be a lot of fun to watch — especially in an All-Star setting.

The international team, assuming everyone plays, will have tremendous size advantages with Antetokounmpo, Wembanyama and Nikola Jokic all on the court, and American rosters will likely wait longer, which will make for an interesting contrast in styles. — Tim Bontemps

What should the league do about LeBron James’ 21-year All-Star streak?

If James is healthy, he should be in the All-Star game. It’s very simple. Are you one of the 12 best American players in the league? Yes. Are the Lakers a factor in the West? Yes. Are his numbers worth considering? 22.6/5.9/6.9 on 50.9% shooting — yes.

Add in the fact that the game is being played in LA, and this could be James’ swan song, and it makes absolutely no sense to have him in the game.

If the coaches don’t vote for James as a reserve, it’s up to Adam Silver to put him on the roster. Now, there may be hard feelings from around the league about how last year went – and understandably so. James reported to San Francisco but was scratched late in the game due to foot and ankle discomfort.

If he had decided not to play early, the right player would have been selected instead of an All-Star. That should have been handled better.

But looking at the bigger picture, as the league looks for ways to keep the All-Star game relevant, one of its goals is to honor the legends as they come out. Think of Michael Jordan in Atlanta in 2003; Kobe Bryant in Toronto in 2016; or even Dirk Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade in Charlotte in 2019, both of whom were added to the game by Silver, although their production on the court had dipped significantly.

As long as James is healthy, you should extend that All-Star streak to 22 years. — Dave McMenamin

<picture></picture>
LeBron James is in his eighth season with the Los Angeles Lakers, and is averaging 22.6 PPG. (Photo by Jevone Moore/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

What is the league in the new format

The reaction to the new format has generally been backlash, but there is hope that the format change leads to a better game. In 2020, when the league added late points and the game was held just weeks after Kobe Bryant’s death, there was more competition. However, nothing the league has tried has worked for long.

The biggest talking point of the entire league has nothing to do with the All-Star Game itself. The ongoing investigation into the LA Clippers, owner Steve Ballmer, and Kawhi Leonard over a potential salary cap could disrupt the weekend. With the game being held at the Intuit Dome, Ballmer’s newly constructed home base, that investigation could be a dominant theme. — Bontemps

Biggest All-Star Impacts You Don’t Know About

Changes to the 2017 and 2023 Collective Bargaining Agreements removed all financial benefits for the All-Star selection. A rule introduced in 2011 previously allowed a first- or second-round pick to receive 30% of the salary cap on their second contract if they were named an All-Star starter at least twice. However, that is no longer one of the goals of the rookie supermax, which means that Wembanyama’s selection as a starter will not affect his expansion.

Overall, teams have shied away from adding contract bonuses — even windfall bonuses — because they’re looking at the apron. This past free agency, no player had an All-Star bonus negotiated into his contract. Seven players currently have All-Star incentives: Kevin Durant, RJ Barrett, DeMar DeRozan, Donte DiVincenzo, Aaron Gordon, Tyler Herro and Domantas Sabonis. No starters have been selected.

Of the 10 All-Star players, only Wembanyama and Brunson do not have multiple contracts. Wembanyama is in the third year of his rookie contract and Brunson signed a four-year, $156.5 million extension through 2024. Brunson’s deal paved the way for New York to acquire Karl-Anthony Towns, extend Mikal Bridges and stay under the second apron this season. – Bobby Marks

<picture></picture>
Kevin Durant passed Dirk Nowitzki on the NBA scoring list on Sunday to reach 6th place. (Photo by Kenneth Richmond/Getty Images)

Let’s generate some rosters

Building on Bontemps’ recent All-Star selection, eight of the remaining 14 All-Star selections appear to be locks: Scottie Barnes, Jalen Duren, Jalen Johnson and Donovan Mitchell in the East; and Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards, Jamal Murray and Alperen Sengun in the West.

That leaves six spots up for grabs, three in each conference. The open spots in the East should come down to Karl-Anthony Towns from the collapsing Knicks, the Heat’s draft picks in Norman Powell and Bam Adebayo, and two top players with solid numbers on weak teams, in the Nets’ Michael Porter Jr. and Pacers’ Pascal Siakam.

In the West, the debates about the last places will be very controversial, as the slate of eligible players includes Chet Holmgren (with low counting statistics, but the best efficiency and defensive numbers of the best NBA team), Devin Booker (the leader of the most amazing opponent in the conference), the Most Improved Player, the favorite player Deni A played two games due to injury Deni A.
