He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley.

DENVER — Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott sat by his locker after Saturday night’s loss to the Denver Broncos, watching the same play about 20 times. Each time, he reached the same conclusion: Bills receiver Brandin Cooks made a perfect catch in overtime.

“That play is not close at all. That’s a catch all the way … and nobody can assure me that that ball wasn’t caught and it’s Buffalo,” McDermott told a pool reporter after his postgame news conference. “I just don’t know how the NFL handled it, especially the way they did it. I think the players and the fans deserve an explanation, you know?”

The Bills lost 33-30 in the AFC divisional round. In their only possession of the extra frame, a controversial call left McDermott with plenty to say.

Editor’s Choice

2 Related

Bills quarterback Josh Allen threw the ball on third-and-11 from the Buffalo 36-yard line, and as Cooks came down with the ball and appeared to be kneeling and making contact with him, Broncos linebacker Ja’Quan McMillian got his right hand on the ball during the snap and took it. Instead of Buffalo having a field goal attempt, the Broncos had the ball on their own 20 yard line.

“He stepped on me, I just fought with my hands and finished the game,” said McMillian. “Actually, he had the ball going down, and when I put my hand on the ball, I was able to take it from him. I fell on top of him and I just picked the ball up and showed the fans some love.”

The game was ruled an inning, which Broncos coach Sean Payton described as “an amazing game.” Because overtime challenges are not allowed, McDermott called a timeout. He realized that the proper review process was not possible. The officials did not stop the game to review the game, but it was being watched by league officials in New York.

McDermott told the pool reporter that he was “upset” and that the show should have been “handled differently.”

“I don’t understand why the chief who is present in this game does not get the opportunity to watch the same thing that the people of New York govern,” he said.

<picture></picture>
Broncos linebacker Ja’Quan McMillian stripped the ball from Bills’ Brandin Cooks at a critical moment in overtime of Saturday’s AFC divisional round game. AP Photo/Jack Dempsey

A separate interview for the pool report was conducted with referee Carl Cheffers, who explained what seemed to be involved.

“The receiver has to complete the catch process,” Cheffers said. “He was going down as part of the catch and lost control of the ball when he hit the ground. The linebacker got it at that point. The linebacker completed the catch, so the linebacker was given the ball.”

Cheffers said it was confirmed in the replay that the ball did not hit the ground.

Although Cooks said he felt he caught the pass, he said he should have done more to leave things in the hands of the officials. Multiple Bills players took to social media after the game to show that they felt the catch was over by Cooks.

“The biggest play in the game that decided the game, maybe, again, is not to put it back,” McDermott said, speaking to the officials. “That’s why I had to call timeout. It’s not what I wanted to do, but I had to do it to make sure I understood what was going on and that they were looking into it.”

McDermott added: “I’m saying it because I’m representing Nathi, hell. I’m representing us. What happened, it shouldn’t go down the way I’m estimating. These guys spent three hours playing football, spilling their guts so they wouldn’t say, ‘Hey, let’s take it easy.’ That’s why I’m worried.”

In the Broncos’ subsequent game-winning drive, the Bills were called for two defensive pass interference penalties, becoming only the second team in the past 25 years, regular season or playoffs, to have multiple such penalties on a single drive in overtime. (It also happened to the New York Jets against the Green Bay Packers in 2018.)

Cornerback Tre’Davious White, who was called for a second pass interference while covering Marvin Mims Jr., disagreed with the penalty, which stopped the Broncos at the Bills’ 8-yard line.

“As a defensive back, here’s what you want: Take the guy down and finish the game. Referees don’t know football, man,” White said.

White said he felt Mims wasn’t looking back at the ball and said he was “playing with his hands.”

“I didn’t touch him before the ball got there,” White said. “I feel like I finished the pack like I was trained to do.”

Alaina GetzenbergJan 18, 2026, 01:17 AM ET Shut up Alaina Getzenberg covers the Buffalo Bills for ESPN.
