Michael Carrick enjoyed a dream start to life in the Manchester United hot seat as Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu won the derby 2-0 against title-chasing Manchester City.<\/p>\n
The 198th meeting of the cross-town rivals saw the team that started the seventh day in the Premier League accept second and the former midfielder, captain and coach of the Red Devils took charge for the first time since his return.<\/p>\n
Carrick was this week appointed as head coach until the end of the season and has overseen a rapid improvement, with second-half goals from Mbeumo and Dorgu earning United a deserved win against City at a rejuvenated Old Trafford.<\/p>\n
It was an impressive all-round display from the hosts, who staged a fortnight’s uproar after Ruben Amorim exited behind them in style on their way to a first win since Boxing Day.<\/p>\n
Pep Guardiola’s side rarely threatened Carrick’s men, who could have won by more had it not been for Gianluigi Donnarumma’s brilliant saves, woodwork and three goals ruled out for offside.<\/p>\n
Stuttering title contenders City may be aggrieved that Diogo Dalot was not sent off for a challenge on J\u00e9r\u00e9my Doku, but Manchester’s red side won’t be paying any attention.<\/p>\n
Carrick’s delight was clear after Saturday’s lunchtime win, which followed his three-game unbeaten run as goalkeeper after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking in November 2021.<\/p>\n Harry Maguire was one of five changes made by the new manager and he came very close to scoring the opener in the third minute as he met a corner with a header off the crossbar.<\/p>\n United’s performance was unsettling for City but they were almost shown an early red card after Dalot’s late challenge left Doku in pain.<\/p>\n Referee Anthony Taylor gave him a yellow card and VAR Craig Pawson confirmed that he had decided to look at the contact without too much force.<\/p>\n City had the ball but United looked more threatening.<\/p>\n Dorgu forced Donnarumma into a save and Amad Diallo found the net after rounding Donnarumma, who was eventually ruled offside.<\/p>\n Bruno Fernandes would again see his goal conceded as United bounced back after a sluggish spell that included Senne Lammens saving his side, and his embarrassment, when he stopped Max Alleyne heading home a corner that he needlessly conceded.<\/p>\n Phil Foden, admired by United fans from the start, and Alleyne were substituted at half-time, but City continued to be on the back foot.<\/p>\n Diallo intercepted Nico O’Reilly’s weak half-time introduction and forced Donnarumma into a save, the keeper then denied Casemiro with the next goal.<\/p>\n City’s number 1 denied Mbeumo when United pushed for a goal that would have come in the 65th minute after a good break.<\/p>\n Maguire headed in a free-kick and Mbeumo flicked the ball past a City player, the hosts headed forward when Fernandes put the ball in the middle.<\/p>\n United outnumbered the visitors and the captain slipped to Mbeumo, returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, and scored a great goal on Donnarumma. Carrick jumped for joy in the technical field.<\/p>\n Diallo scored a goal that fell across the face of the goal before Mbeumo lifted it high.
