But if the Rams want to find a future behind Davante Adams by trading for Brown, they shouldn’t do it for at least one simple reason: AJ Brown is also too old.

The Eagles hope to find an opening.

Ignore what Eagles GM Howie Roseman said about the team not intending to trade Brown, that’s the same statement the general manager makes every year about players on the board. He’s not too old…he’s too old.

You’re not too old to be in the NFL, but you’re certainly too old to pay $30 million or trade up for a first-round pick. That’s the kind of price you pay for a top receiver who can build your offense and Brown, who was that value in 2022 when the Eagles acquired him at age 25, is no longer that guy.

If Roseman thinks pretending he won’t trade AJ Brown will increase his value for a first-round pick, he’ll be waiting all year to find a taker.

How about a second round pick? That’s what the Steelers traded for DK Metcalf and paid Metcalf $33 million a season. What does that look like?

Metcalf, who just turned 28, had 850 yards and was suspended in the final two games of the season for making the same “Mr. Sensitive” mistakes he made when he was a cheap player in Seattle. This is when you really want to have a star receiver: When he’s cheap and on a rookie or second contract.

But the Steelers traded Metcalf and paid him a third contract. The Eagles paid Brown a third contract through 2024 and are already regretting it.

Will the Eagles trade Brown?

If the Eagles trade AJ Brown before June 1, they will incur $43 million in dead cap money in 2026, which is double what they will pay Brown if they don’t trade him. Here’s what Jimmy Kempski wrote in The Philly Voice:

If Brown is traded this offseason before June 1, the Eagles will have $43,515,106 in dead money. Put another way, he would count $43,515,106 against the Eagles’ cap in 2026, while playing for another team. If the Eagles just keep him, Brown will count 23,393,497 in their 2026 draft, and, you know, he’ll be playing for the Eagles. (The dead cap hit will still be $43,515,106 if he trades after June 1, but $27,161,609 of that will count toward the 2027 cap.)

Kempski notes that despite the cap hit, Philadelphia’s front office is already operating with the expectation that they will pay dead hit hits to former players ALL THE TIME. That won’t be any different if they trade Brown. They basically expected something like this to happen.

Brown has reportedly been asking for a trade for months.

The Eagles will be financially free from Brown in 2027.

It makes sense that the Eagles would trade Brown if the team was willing to give up a pick that would allow Philadelphia to draft his replacement, which the Titans tried to do in 2022 (but ended up with Treylon Burks instead). It worked for the Vikings in 2021 when they traded for Stefon Diggs and drafted Justin Jefferson.

But why on earth would a GM be smart enough to trade a first-round pick for a 29-year-old wide receiver with huge debt and a reputation as a diva?

So the second round pick?

Why would you trade AJ Brown for the second round? Half of the receivers you can draft in the second round of the mid-level draft will be more valuable per dollar than the 29-year-old Brown.

And that’s just 29 years. Let’s not forget that he is trading a 30, 31, and 32 year old receiver.

These are the BAD receivers relative to the top receivers in the NFL in 2026.

Recipients of 29 years

As I wrote back in 2021, four years ago, being 29 has not been kind to receivers.
