{"id":2786,"date":"2026-01-17T08:21:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T00:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/insightresearcher.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/17\/ole-miss-qb-trinidad-chambliss-is-suing-the-ncaa-for-an-extra-year-of-eligibility\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T14:46:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T06:46:23","slug":"ole-miss-qb-trinidad-chambliss-is-suing-the-ncaa-for-an-extra-year-of-eligibility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.insightresearcher.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/17\/ole-miss-qb-trinidad-chambliss-is-suing-the-ncaa-for-an-extra-year-of-eligibility\/","title":{"rendered":"Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss is suing the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Mississippi quarterback Trinidad Chambliss sued the NCAA in state court Friday to get another year of eligibility so he can play for the Rebels next season.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit filed in Lafayette County came a week after the NCAA denied Ole Miss&#8217; request for a one-year extension, saying the university and Chambliss&#8217; previous school \u2014 Ferris State \u2014 failed to provide enough medical documentation to support the request.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit filed Friday called the NCAA&#8217;s denial &#8220;in bad faith, unreasonable and unreasonable,&#8221; along with Chambliss&#8217; medical history and includes letters from doctors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite the duty of good faith and good faith owed to Trinidad, the NCAA insists on considering the evidence in the Trinidad case in isolation, rather than as a whole; it interprets its rules to impose requirements that are not contained in them; it takes positions that are unreasonable if not unreasonable; and it acts in an unreasonable and irrational way when making a decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ole Miss&#8217; arguments revolve around the fact that the 23-year-old Chambliss, despite having been in college for five years, has only played three years of college football because of that medical history.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Trinidad first enrolled at Ferris State in the fall of 2021, but health and physical disabilities prevented his ability to adequately train and condition and develop athletically,&#8221; the suit said.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>After redshirting his first season at Ferris State in 2021-22, Chambliss was held out of his sophomore season due to medical reasons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Apparently, Trinidad&#8217;s medical conditions, which prevented him from competing in any sport during these years, were beyond his control or that of Ferris County,&#8221; the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n<p>He played two more seasons at a Division II school in Michigan, leading the Bulldogs to a national championship before transferring to Ole Miss before the start of this season.<\/p>\n<p>Chambliss completed 294 of 445 passes (66.1%) for 3,937 yards with 22 touchdowns and three interceptions for Ole Miss (13-2), which set a school record for wins, including two after making the College Football Playoff for the first time. He ran for 527 yards and eight more TDs.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The Rebels lost 31-27 to Miami in the College Football Playoff semifinals on Jan. 8.<\/p>\n<p>The NCAA, when contacted Friday, did not have a new statement, but referred to its statement from last week saying &#8220;This decision is consistent with the consistent application of NCAA rules.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The NCAA said in a statement last week that approval of the waiver requires schools to submit medical certificates from the treating physician at the time of the student&#8217;s injury or illness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Documents provided to Ole Miss and the student&#8217;s previous school include a doctor&#8217;s note from his visit in December 2022, stating that the student-athlete is &#8216;doing very well&#8217; since being seen in August 2022,&#8221; the NCAA said. &#8220;Furthermore, the athlete&#8217;s former school stated that they have no medical documents, injury reports or medical conditions involving the athlete at the time and cited &#8216;developmental needs and competitive conditions of our team&#8217; as the reason for the athlete not playing in the 2022-23 season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter previously said the school would appeal the NCAA&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>_____<\/p>\n<p>Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season.
