The New York Mets’ off-season took a turn for the better on Jan. 16, as the club agreed to terms with All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette on a three-year, $126 million deal, according to a baseball official with direct knowledge of the deal.<\/p>\n

This person spoke to USA TODAY Sports and asked that his name be withheld because the deal had not yet been finalized.<\/p>\n

Bichette’s stay in New York may be short: He has opt-out clauses after each of his first seasons, and he can re-enter the free agent market at 28 next winter, unless he is included in compensation for a draft pick.<\/p>\n

Bichette became the Premier League’s last free agent and his deal with the Mets comes just hours after slugger Kyle Tucker, the No. Now, the Mets have a commendable infield setup and, again, a formidable lineup, with Bichette likely to play third base, All-Star Francisco Lindor at shortstop, trade acquisition Marcus Semien at second and a combination of Jorge Polanco and Mark Vientos at first.<\/p>\n

Bichette, a former shortstop for the Toronto Blue Jays, played a key role in the team’s trip to the 2025 World Series, posting a .311\/.357\/.483 line in 139 regular season games before sitting out the first two rounds of the playoffs with a knee injury. He came back and had eight hits and a key home run in the Blue Jays’ seven-game World Series loss to the Dodgers.<\/p>\n
