At one point, it looked like John Harbaugh would be the next head coach of the New York Giants, but that hasn’t happened yet. After visiting with the team on Wednesday, the reports came he came out later that night that he had decided to take the job<\/span> New York.<\/p>\n Giants fans celebrated the hiring, but the celebration has turned to concern, because two days later, there is still no deal in place. The team had all day Thursday to finalize a contract with Harbaugh, but a deal was never made, and as of Friday morning, no contract was in place. <\/p>\n This probably goes without saying, but this is the part where we’ll point out that there have been at least two times since 2000 when a coach verbally accepted a job, but changed his mind at the last second. The most famous event came in January 2000 when Bill Belichick he accepted the job of head coach<\/span> of the Jets, but then decided not to attend the press conference. Less than 10 years ago, a similar situation occurred with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. On Feb. 6, 2018, the Colts announced that they would hire McDaniels as their new coach<\/span>but he didn’t take the job, because later that night, McDaniels had a change of heart and decided to stay in New England. <\/p>\n It was a shocking turn of events that proves one big thing: No deal is done until a contract is signed, and right now, Harbaugh’s contract hasn’t been signed. According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, a deal could come as soon as Friday, but it’s also unlikely that it will come at all. <\/p>\n “Harbaugh had a very good approach to all interested parties,” Pelissero said. “This depends on John Harbaugh being the next coach of the Giants, but it was not and is not the end. Those negotiations are ongoing and could reach a conclusion in the next few hours. Then the Giants hope to be able to celebrate their biggest victory in years.”<\/p>\n That said, Giants fans probably don’t need to panic just yet. For one thing, the Giants acknowledged the fact that Harbaugh might be their next coach with a simple tweet on Thursday. <\/p>\n CBS Sports NFL reporter Matt Zenitz reported Friday morning that the two sides “are still in the process of finalizing a deal, with the full expectation that this will be done and that he will be hired as the next coach of the Giants.”<\/p>\n Giants writer Art Stapleton also reported on Friday that it was only a matter of time before a deal was made, “This is not about John Harbaugh still wanting,” Stapleton wrote. “He is the head coach of the Buccaneers, the spirit of the law. The letter of the law, they must go through the contract and make sure that the language works for the lawyers on both sides. Again, the agreement was agreed upon. It is the official language now.”<\/p>\n Since Harbaugh has yet to sign a contract with the Giants, other teams are free to contact the former Ravens coach, and that may be happening, but he may not be listening.
