\n <\/div>\n Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports reports that Manchester United’s transfer business will not affect the sacking of Ruben Amorim but believes the club are unlikely to spend in January.<\/span>Carrick takes over a club that appears to be at a very low standard. Not just in terms of results and missed opportunities this season, but in terms of behavior and confidence – whether the players or those at Old Trafford are not there.<\/p>\n
Being at Old Trafford after the 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton, it wasn’t about the performance or the result – it was about what the loss meant to Manchester United’s good fortunes.<\/p>\n
Call it the culmination of sustained mismanagement or the resurgence of a decade of decline, the facts are: this United team has reached its lowest numbers – whether it’s the first time they’ve been knocked out of both cups in the first round since 1982 or their lowest performance in a season in more than 110 years.<\/p>\n
The atmosphere at Old Trafford was telling again.<\/p>\n
A crowd as patient as they can be, who have been praised many times for that trait, are losing hope for the team in front of them.<\/p>\n
It meant that after 14 months of Ruben Amorim (mostly) defending his players from the media and trying to shield them from the noise, Darren Fletcher had a different message to send after their exit from the FA Cup.<\/p>\n

He even sounded sympathetic towards the end. A man who has seen high things in the club gave the impression that he was left without any pleasure from what he saw.<\/p>\n
And that makes you wonder what Carrick’s new backroom staff, including the likes of Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate, will find as they train for the first time this week.<\/p>\n
Will it be a team still reeling from Amorim’s sacking, which happened a few weeks ago?<\/p>\n
Amorim made it clear that he had to watch over the players at Carrington and they would not be able to continue training without him. I’m not sure if that was really the case but it’s easy to forget that some, if not most of this squad, have had five different names of coaches and leaders since the start of last season.<\/p>\n
A team needs consistency, time and most importantly – someone to lead it.<\/p>\n
Whether we will see a repeat of the woeful era led by former caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick or a resurgence of Carrick’s competition for the role, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, led in his interim…<\/p>\n

\n <\/div>\n As Michael Carrick prepares for his first game in charge of his former club, Man Utd, here is a look back at some of the players who have returned to their clubs as managers.<\/span>The good news for Carrick and United fans is that he will once again have the firepower needed by his team when they face Manchester City this weekend, with Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo returning from the AFCON.<\/p>\n
As they have shown in recent years, this season too, this team has seemed to do better against the ‘bigger’ team this season and did not get impressive wins against Liverpool and Newcastle United for example.<\/p>\n
And who knows, maybe City will be the right team at the right time in this group.<\/p>\n
They showed with draws against Wolves, West Ham and Burnley last month just how hard they struggle to break teams down, especially in midfield and that’s the last thing you’d expect to see from a City side who feel like the league’s entertainers at the moment.<\/p>\n
Carrick – the right choice at the right time<\/h3>\n We know United have entertained two former players in Carrick and Solskjaer in the process, but it’s important to point out the management – including director of football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada – would argue they didn’t want to cash in on nostalgia.<\/p>\n
Instead, they wanted to appoint someone who understands the club and who can hit the ground running, and work in the current and new leadership structure used in the club.<\/p>\n
Carrick has the above. He spent 12 years at the club as a player while working under Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer during his last spell at the club as a coach.<\/p>\n

\n <\/div>\n Sky Sports’ David Reed looks at how Man Utd could fare under Carrick, analyzing his form during his time at Middlesbrough.<\/span>A balanced and determined individual who has grown since his last spell at Old Trafford, it will be interesting to see how Carrick develops the style of play he used at Middlesbrough. A 4-2-3-1 without a 4-2-3-1 would change into something like a 3-2-5 when his team attacked, but his team probably lacked the firepower and skill needed to develop that type of system.<\/p>\n
Whether United can show the fight and passion to salvage their season remains to be seen, but Carrick’s composure and composure feels the right kind of character needed at a time when this team is lacking confidence and momentum.<\/p>\n
But it almost seems absurd to look too closely at his time at Middlesbrough. He will admit himself how much he has learned from his first permanent managerial position in football and is wisely not staying in other positions to grind out the two and a half years he had at his previous club.<\/p>\n

\n <\/div>\n The team’s best goals since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was manager of Manchester United<\/span>Solskjaer’s return would have been epic. There is no doubting his connection and relationship with the club and its fans but there would be fair questions directed at the management.<\/p>\n
Since INEOS invested, they have tried to modernize the club as they felt it was possible.<\/p>\n
A renewed and improved training ground; a more data-led approach to recruitment and analysis; drive to be best in class in several departments.<\/p>\n
Going back to the appointment that worked under the previous regime led by Ed Woodward does not feel connected to the previous points.<\/p>\n

His last five games for the club included a 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool, a one-sided 2-0 defeat to Manchester City and a 4-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road.<\/p>\n
Context is also needed. Perhaps what tugs at the heartstrings of United fans is that, after finishing second in his second full season in charge, there is an argument that the carpet has been pulled from under him rather than allowing him to develop his system and style of play.<\/p>\n

\n Image:<\/span>United’s stats in Solskjaer’s two full seasons in chargeIn the summer of 2021, when United should have strengthened their midfield and young striker, the club re-signed Cristiano Ronaldo, 36, and added Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.<\/p>\n
Ronaldo risked Solskjaer’s attacking style of football and tried to use it, while Sancho did not find a home in the team.<\/p>\n
So maybe Solskjaer deserves some credit for how his tenure at the club ended, but perhaps he needs to rebuild his career elsewhere before returning to Old Trafford in the future.<\/p>\n
