Harbaugh brings credibility and stability immediately after 18 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens from 2008 to 2025 where he was their franchise winning coach (180 wins) and won Super Bowl XLVII to end the 2012 season. New York desperately needed a floor lifter like Harbaugh after going 4-13 in 2025 to clinch its eighth double-digit losing campaign in the past nine years. Only the New York Jets (49-116) have been worse than the Giants (55-109-1) since 2016.

John Harbaugh hired New York minute: Giants get ‘A’ for moving quickly in pursuit of new coach

                    Jared Dube

However, the Giants have plenty of opportunities going forward. They have the fifth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, a young potential franchise quarterback in Jaxson Dart, an exciting running back in Cam Skattebo, a Pro Bowl No. 1 widely accepted in Malik Nabers, the 2022 second-team All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas and perhaps the most talented defensive player and the Prowl Bowl of the NFL in Brian tackle Dexter Lawrence and a few top-five players in Kayvon Thibodeaux and Abdul Carter.

So what’s next on the Giants’ to-do list after acquiring Harbaugh’s services? Let’s explore what an ideal 2025 offseason plan could look like for New York.

Consultant candidates

With Harbaugh’s Ravens successful, Baltimore was the NFL’s fourth-winningest team in the past 18 seasons; he’s not big on X’s and O’s. His NFL coordinator experience comes in the special teams department, so his recruitment at both the offensive and defensive coordinator positions will be critical.

One of these hires is reportedly already done, with NFL Media reporting that Todd Monken, the Ravens’ coordinator from 2023 to 2025, will reunite with Harbaugh as his OC with the Giants. The Ravens were the NFL’s No. 3 scoring offense (27.9 points per game), the No. 1 overall offense. Of course, it helps to have multiple-time NFL MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson and Derrick “King” Henry at running back.

Monken will join a talented offensive nucleus, Dart became the second quarterback in NFL history to have at least 15 passing touchdowns (15) and eight rushing touchdowns (nine), joining Cam Newton in 2011. Skattebo was one of five players with at least 400 yards and 410 meters rushing in at least 20 Weeks (410 meters) 8 of 2025 before his season-ending ankle injury. Others were a who’s who of running backs: De’Von Achane, Christian McCaffrey, Bijan Robinson and Jonathan Taylor. Nabers earned a Pro Bowl selection as a rookie, and his 127 career catches in his first 19 games, before a torn ACL, are the second most in 19 games by a player in NFL history behind only Odell Beckham Jr.’s 133.

Harbaugh’s hiring of a defensive coordinator will be interesting. The Ravens’ defense has fallen sharply in 2025 under Zach Orr, ranking 18th in scoring (23.4 points per game allowed) after being No. 1 (16.5 points per game) the past few seasons under Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald. Someone like current Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde would be interesting. He’s not the defensive player for Seattle that Macdonald is, which will make him take the Giants job for a promotion. Durde was the Dallas CowboysCowboys defensive line coach under Dan Quinn from 2021 to 2023, so he was instrumental in developing Micah Parsons into the All-Pro he is today.

Offensive line coaching will also be important, given that the Giants’ offensive line, without Thomas, has been weak for years. Someone like Bill Callahan, one of the league’s best punters, would make a lot of sense.

Cornerback market

The cornerback position opposite Paulson Adebo will be a key area to address, with Cor’Dale Flott set to hit free agency and former first-round pick Deonte Banks not out. That position is especially important in the NFC East as the Philadelphia Eagles have AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, the Dallas Cowboys have CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens and the Washington Commanders have Terry McLaurin.

Fortunately for the Giants, cornerback is one of the most talent-rich positions this offseason. Tariq Woolen, Jaylen Watson, Alontae Taylor, Jamel Dean and Nahshon Wright will be participating. Prioritizing Flott makes sense, but if he goes to a new home, there are many options.

Other party needs

Re-signing 31-year-old right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor would also make sense after providing steady play, allowing just four sacks and 17 quarterback pressures this season. Areas of the interior line still need work, but those may need to be addressed in the draft. Linebacker could be a position the Giants could use again, with the ability to save $9 million in cap space by releasing Bobby Okereke this offseason.

Draft plan

The Giants could give Nabers a true running mate at receiver by selecting Ohio State’s Carnell Tate or Arizona State’s fifth overall pick Jordyn Tyson. When he looked around the class and saw Dak Prescott’s offensive success while throwing to CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, giving Dart a one-two punch at receiver, he could grow into, he could make all the sense in the world, while using a second-round pick on the offensive line.

Round 1

5

Round 2

37

Round 4

105

Round 5

143

Round 6

184

Round 6

190 (via Dolphins)

Round 6

191 (via Cowboys)

A realistic change timeline

After the 2025 NFL postseason set a record with five teams having 11 or more losses the previous year — the New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers — there will be Giants fans who think a 2026 playoff run is achievable. The NFC East will be a tough hill to climb, the Eagles are still loaded with talent and the Cowboys could be a playoff team if they can avoid being the worst scoring defense in the NFL, as they are in 2025.

The Patriots jumped from worst to first after spending an NFL record $364.4 million in free agency last season to bolster their roster on Drake Maye. The Giants don’t have that kind of cap space, but with their talent on both sides of the ball, jumping to eight or nine wins and becoming a wild card team isn’t a possibility in 2026. The change will obviously depend on Dart’s development and if New York can get the offensive line right under Harbaugh.

It will be interesting to see if Harbaugh’s inability to fall late in the game catches up with him in New York, because the difference in a one-point game can make or break a team record. In 2025, the Giants were 1-6 in one-point games while Harbaugh’s Ravens were nearly as bad at 1-4. Baltimore hit 26 streaks of 10 points or more under Harbaugh from 2008 to 2025, the most in the NFL. 12 of them have come in the last five seasons, five more than any team in the league during that time.

Harbaugh will bring coaching ability and stability, but time will tell if that will be enough to lift the Giants back into regular playoff contention.

The New York Giants chose to lead the franchise, as CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones reports that John Harbaugh he agreed to be the next coach of the team.
