A CEO-style head coach who was a special teams coordinator before as the league’s bottomless team, Harbaugh made decisions on the fourth down and showed the ability to adapt to the times and the composition of his roster, repeatedly looking for new ideas on both sides of the ball to be able to shape the system around his players rather than trying to fit square pegs into round holes.

He will bring immediate stability and talent to a Giants organization that has been desperate for at least the past decade, as it has ridden coach after coach and disappointment after disappointment. He should also be able to bring a strong coaching staff, given the connections he has made over the years with the various coaches he has worked with.

Reports have spread that he will bring Todd Monken to New York as his offensive coordinator, which could be a great hire as the Giants look to build their future around Jaxson Dart. Lamar Jackson was already a superstar before Monken arrived in Baltimore, but he certainly helped take Jackson’s game to the next level. If he can do the same for Dart, that would be a huge boon as the Giants look to improve after being one of the worst teams in the league.

We don’t know yet who Harbaugh would like to bring with him on the defensive side of the ball, but he has found defensive minds over and over again over the years. He has had coaches such as Rex Ryan, Vic Fangio, Chuck Pagano, Dean Pees, Teryl Austin, Wink Martindale, Steve Spagnuolo, Mike Macdonald, Leslie Frazier, Jesse Minter, Zach Orr, Anthony Weaver and Dennard Wilson work under him as coordinators or position coaches at some point in the past decade, the better defenses of the NFL. A lot of that obviously has to do with the talent they’ve been able to acquire on that side of the ball, thanks to an excellent front office, but Harbaugh has also brought in a number of strong defensive coaches, as mentioned.

Harbaugh’s age (he’ll turn 64 at the start of next season) and the Ravens’ recent tendency to blow up leads are less of a concern here, but it’s mitigated by his long record of success and the Giants’ dire need for someone who can run the organization professionally. Yes, you can find that type of coach anywhere if you turn over the right stones, but the Giants clearly valued Harbaugh’s pedigree, and moved quickly to land a man who many considered the top candidate available in this round.

What others say

CBS Sports senior NFL writer Pete Prisco was even more effusive in his praise of the Harbaugh hire.

“For him, ‘A’,” Prisco said. “It’s the best job out there. And I said that when all the jobs opened up. And people said, ‘What are you saying?’ Well, it’s a Giant. The New York Giants. You are in New York.

“And not only that, you have a little bit of talent on that team to build around. When you look at the NFL, what do you want? You want a quarterback and you want pass rushers. Yes, they have it. If you believe in Jaxson Dart – and I think he can be successful – then you have a quarterback and pass rushers, so it makes sense from that point of view, so, from the A’s.

“From the Giants’ point of view, A+. You targeted him, you went and got him, and now it’s all up to you to make sure it works around him. I think this is a no-brainer hire on both sides. If I were John Harbaugh, that’s the job I’d want. If I were the New York Giants, John Harbaugh is the guy I’d want.”

CBS Sports HQ NFL analyst Danny Kanell echoed many of those sentiments.

“I’ll give it an ‘A+,'” Kanell said. “This is the only coach that’s going to come in and talk about this Giants organization as a potential playoff team. And I don’t think it’s going to be just me. With the amount of talent the Giants have on this roster, and the track record of success in building a winning culture, and the coordinator he’s probably going to bring with him, I think this is a home run.”

You won’t find many people out there who don’t think this job is one of the best jobs in the cycle, regardless of who gets the other jobs available. Harbaugh was wanted for a reason, and the Giants were able to land him before anyone else had a chance. Even if it didn’t work out, the process that led up here was solid, even if it seemed preordained that the Giants would sign Harbaugh if he was available.

The New York Giants made a big move on Wednesday night, as it happens now working to finalize the agreement and former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh to be their next coach, CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones confirmed.
