Next Man Utd manager: Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel amid Jamie Carrgher’s choice for Old Trafford role | Football news

Jamie Carragher has revealed his shortlist of four players to become Manchester United’s next manager, suggesting that the next permanent hire at Old Trafford must be someone who represents the right “energy” and “drive” to lead the club forward.
United parted ways with Ruben Amorim earlier this month after a disastrous 14-month reign at the club and have since appointed Michael Carrick as manager until the end of the season.
Carrick scored an impressive 2-0 win against rivals Manchester City in his first game in charge, but Carragher insists Old Trafford needs a “special” leader.
Here are the picks and what Carragher had to say…
Thomas Tuchel
Current role: England manager
What Carragher said: “He has been in the Premier League before. You are obviously a top manager. The thing I love about him is I still think he still has that energy and drive and spikiness about him.
“He’s gone into the England team, and he’s messed with their biggest players. Now I’m not saying that should happen in every career he’s had, but there’s something about him.
“He feels like he can go to your club’s fight, and he’ll be fighting other clubs, and there’s something about him.”
Luis Enrique
Current role: Paris Saint-Germain
What Carragher said: “You would be with him all day. Now we see him as the best manager in Europe. He didn’t have a good time at Celta Vigo, he didn’t have a good time at Roma, but Barcelona is still important.”
Eddie Howe
Current role: Newcastle United
What Carragher said: “I’m a big fan of Eddie Howe. The type of football where Newcastle are at their best is high energy going forward, but the real thing I like is that you have to be able to withstand Manchester United’s pressure.
“When you’re in Newcastle and you live in that city, it’s constant and you manage it smartly. Where I think he can help is that Manchester United have a problem with young players – most of them don’t continue to fulfill their potential – but I think Eddie Howe is a great coach.”
Julian Nagelsmann
Current role: Germany
What Carragher said: “I don’t know everything about him but I look at a coach with a big name, he has a lot to prove in one way or another.
Why can’t Carrick take the job?
What Carragher said: “I’m skipping Michael Carrick. I’m going back to this question – do I believe this guy can win the league? I have to believe he can. I don’t believe Man Utd will win the league with Carrick, or Chelsea will win the league with Liam Rosenior. I’m not trying to be disrespectful, but you have to be special. I might be proven wrong.”
Why some candidates are not a good fit
Carragher also highlighted why other candidates, such as Xabi Alonso, Diego Simeone and Oliver Glasner, are not suitable for the role.
“Jurgen Klopp he will not manage Manchester United. That’s out. Xabi Alonso – he can’t do that. He can’t, his association with Liverpool. That won’t happen.
“Carlo Ancelottifor me, I would not have the strength or drive to bring Man Utd back. Zinedine Zidane a smaller version of [Carlo] Ancelotti, but maybe I’m wrong. Enzo Maresca he’s not, but he’s a great coach.
“Xavi he is one, in Barcelona, and He has only a few years of experience as a manager.
“Roberto Martinezif he does a smart job in Portugal, there is no doubt that Roberto is right. One thing he hasn’t done in his career is manage an elite football club.
“He has to do something special. Mauricio Pochettino same with Ancelotti. Chelsea went with Enzo Maresca as they were looking for a young and dynamic coach.
Oliver Glasnerright away, I would say no because of the system. Andoni Iraola he has done a fantastic job and has been linked with top jobs but Bournemouth to Man Utd is a big jump.
“This is the same Marco Silva. I think the next step for them would be Tottenham. Sounds like Tottenham to them. Roberto De Zerbi he is a brilliant coach but he is guilty of going to war with the owners in six weeks.
“Diego Simeone It’s interesting. I was talking to Gary Neville about United’s DNA. It is interesting that Roy [Keane] and Gary both talked about Simeone in different places.
“That goes from what is the DNA of the team because he is a defensive coach. You cannot ask the manager to change.”
