TAKE A PROFESSIONAL
ESPN’s Sam Tighe looks at Man United’s links to Hayden Hackney and Murillo.
It was only a matter of time before Hackney was linked to Carrick’s Manchester United. After all, the 23-year-old was a key midfielder for Middlesbrough during their time together at the club between 2022-2025; and Hackney admitted he was “shocked” when Carrick was let go from his job on Teesside last summer.
Under that expert tutelage, Hackney emerged as England’s leading football developer in the second division. He ranks in the 96th percentile in passing consistently and the 99th percentile in playing consistently in Europe this season. It should be noted that the step up to the Premier League level is huge, however.
Murillo from Forest is obviously very proven at this level. A powerhouse center back, he has shoulders of steel, great recovery speed and, sneakily, a good long passer for him. The Brazilian is tied for second most shots on goal (5) and third most shots from the line (4) since the start of last season, underscoring his natural defensive style.
If there is something that needs to be highlighted, it is that there have been concerns about his fitness in the past year. He has not missed many matchday squads, but his availability has been questioned.
