TAKE A PROFESSIONAL

ESPN Barcelona reporter Sam Marsden explains why there will be a long queue of top clubs looking to sign Dro Fernández:

Signing Fernandez is not a bad move for any European club. The release clause of 6 million euros represents a drop in the ocean compared to the costs of certain teams, especially in England. The worst case scenario is that his development doesn’t continue as expected, for whatever reason, but even then it’s hard to imagine his value dropping too much. The potential upsides are huge.

A player who can operate in midfield or wide, Fernández — compared to Thiago Alcantara and Pedri — caught the eye of Hansi Flick for the U19s and made a pre-season trip last summer with the first team, scoring a fine goal against Daegu FC. LaLiga and Champions League debuts followed, but with Fermín López, Dani Olmo and Raphinha all occupying the number 10 role ahead of him, his path to regular first-team football is unclear at the moment.

However, that’s normal for 18-year-old players — and Fernández turned 18 this week. The cases of Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí, who play regularly between 16 and 18, are unusual, but they have set an example that means other Barça youngsters are eager to get more involved.

However, Fernandez’s announcement that he plans to leave has shocked the team. Manchester City and Chelsea have followed him for years, as has Borussia Dortmund, who may offer the best development opportunities, but it is Paris Saint-Germain who may win the race. PSG coach Luis Enrique’s friendship with Fernández’s agent, Ivan de la Peña, may work in favor of the French club.
