STM Hoops Coaching Wars – Broussard takes down former player Boyd

It’s always a packed house at the Cougardome when one of the St. Louis basketball coach’s former players. Thomas More Danny Broussard is coming to town.
On Jan. 16, former Cougar and now Lafayette Renaissance Charter Academy head coach Brad Boyd returned as a special guest, looking to spoil STM’s winter court festivities.

“It’s always a good thing when it’s a packed crowd, Cougar Court Night, it’s a big tradition, and any time you come to play your former team and your former coach, it’s an exciting game,” Boyd said. “We’ve probably trained together at least ten times, and I managed to beat him twice, so I was trying to get him the third time tonight.”
The non-district game pitted coach and former player against each other again, with both teams looking for a win before district play began. This time, it’s the old-school Broussard coach who did the job when STM beat the Tigers 51-38.
“I’m happy to win,” Broussard said. “I don’t like to beat any of my old players, but Brad – he’s won 12 times, so he’s more than me, so he’ll be fine. But I love Brad, and he’s a competitor, man.”

Cougar protection in motion
After holding their latest opponent to just 10 points the entire game, STM picked up where they left off against the Tigers. The Cougars limited LRCA to just eight points in the first quarter, giving up very little. In the second quarter, that defense turned to offense as STM closed the half on a 14-4 run.

Guards John Michael Charbonnet, LG Carbo and Kyle Guillot played key roles defensively. Charbonnet led the Cougars with three steals, while Guillot had two blocks. Carbo was not afraid to be touched, taking power after charging to force the reform of the LRCA.
“I don’t give them enough credit on defense because we’ve been holding teams to 30 or 40 points a game,” Broussard said. “I think we pride ourselves on stopping, and that’s what happened tonight.”
While the defense was relentless, forward Ryan Robertson led the offense. Finished with 12 points to go along with five rebounds and a block. Robertson helped the Cougars take a comfortable lead into the fourth quarter, making the Tigers’ comeback less likely.
“He’s down by double digits in the fourth quarter, and you know Danny’s going to look for four-to-score things,” Boyd said. “So you’ll have to gamble more often and avoid sleeping here and there while trying to gamble to steal.”

The LRCA wants to go back
STM controlled most of the match, but the Tigers did their best to play catch up. LRCA was without one of its key starters in guard Xzavier Baker, who is dealing with an ankle injury, forcing several freshmen into the starting lineup.
“These are no ordinary freshmen – they are three of the best freshmen in the state, and we are lucky to have them,” Boyd said. “Chance Paddio, Cayman Washington and Keith Guillory held their own, but they had a few young mistakes. You can go back and see we missed a few boxes and had a bunch of open 3s that we just connected on tonight.”
Leading the Tigers’ offense in the loss were Washington and combo guard Evan Ledoux, who each finished with nine points. Boyd will look to cancel his alma mater homecoming as the LRCA closes its non-district program.
