Marc Guehi transfer news: Man City agree personal terms with England defender as move nears completion | Football news

Manchester City have agreed personal terms with Marc Guehi, and his move to Crystal Palace could be completed by the end of the weekend.
Guehi is scheduled to see a doctor in the northwest on Sunday.
The two clubs agreed a fee of £20m on Friday, with a small percentage of future additions, depending on appearances.
Palace felt they could not turn down the money, with the hope that Guehi would be on a free transfer in five months.
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner confirmed Guehi was “in the final stages” of a transfer on Friday and will not play at Sunderland on Saturday.
Glasner has also indicated that he will leave the club at the end of the season, and there may be another blow for Palace towards the end, with striker Jean-Philippe Mateta open to a new challenge and there is a real possibility that he could leave this month.
Pep on City’s defensive issues: ‘It’s a difficult situation’
Sky Sports News It was reported earlier this week that City are the only club who appear ready to make a deal for Guehi this window and Pep Guardiola’s side quickly stepped up their interest.
City believe they are getting a top-quality defender for a relatively small price to pay on the open market, and did not want to wait until the summer due to current injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias.
The inexperienced duo of Abdukodir Khusanov and Max Alleyne, who has been brought back on loan from Sky Bet Championship club Watford, have started City’s last three games and City’s move underlines how serious their defensive problems have become as Stones and Ake face uncertain futures this season.
On City’s defensive woes, Guardiola added: “Without John [Stones]Reuben [Dias]Josko [Gvardiol]we are in a difficult situation not for one game but for a long time.
“It’s a difficult situation. Ruben will be back soon, Josko no, John I hope so, we’ll see.”
Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Arsenal are among the clubs interested in signing Guehi on a free transfer in the summer. And it means City will have to make an attractive offer that Palace and Guehi are willing to pass on now.
Guehi almost joined Liverpool last summer in a £35m deal, but the move collapsed on Deadline Day.
Analysis: Guehi could go straight to Man City
Sky Sports’ Nick Wright:
The most important thing Guehi can give Manchester City, at least in the short term, is availability. He has started 32 of 34 games this season. Only 10 outfield players have played more Premier League minutes since the start of last term.
He appears ideally placed to slot right into Guardiola’s backline and provide much-needed insight after injuries left the City boss with a central defender between 20-year-old Alleyne and 21-year-old Khusanov.
But Guehi would not just be a short-term signing. He is 25 years old with his prime years ahead of him and a long list of cheats to show for his quality.
Guehi flourished during his time at Palace, playing a key role in the club’s FA Cup and Community Shield victories and establishing himself as England’s most valuable defender and one of the best in the Premier League.
Defensively dominant, strong in duels and quick to close big gaps, Guehi is also proven on the ball, with the flexibility to play in different systems. He also provides a growing threat from set-pieces, having notched five goals and four assists in the Premier League over the past two seasons.
It makes for an attractive package. Guehi could provide immediate cover amid City’s injury woes – and strengthen the squad for the future as well as the present.
Glasner to leave Palace at the end of the season: ‘I’m looking for a new challenge’
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace coach Glasner has revealed he will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, citing his desire to “find a new challenge” after nearly two years at Selhurst Park.
The Austrian ended months of speculation over his future ahead of Saturday’s game at Sunderland by explaining that he had told Palace owner Steve Parish since October that he would not be renewing his existing contract.
Glasner has long been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park after much public frustration over the transfer business during last summer’s window, and he suggests that failure to build on last season’s historic FA Cup triumph and only his second season in Europe.
The manager said he kept the news under wraps due to the club’s busy schedule in the final months of 2025, and had told his players earlier on Friday before their trip to the Stadium of Light.
He said: “The decision has been taken months ago, I had a meeting with Steve [Parish] in October, international break.
“We talked for a long time, I told him that I will not sign a new contract.
“We agreed at that time that it is better to keep it between us. It is better that we do that and keep it secret for three months. I told the team today, because I think now it is important to clarify.
“We had a very busy schedule and that’s why we didn’t want to talk about it. Steve and I want the best for Crystal Palace.”

Another contribution to Palace? Mateta may leave this month
Crystal Palace are facing the loss of another key player and striker Mateta is open to a new challenge.
There are many chances that Mateta will join captain Guehi in leaving the team this month.
Palace could once again lose their top goalscorer, Mateta, as the Frenchman is open to a new challenge.
The 28-year-old wants to play for a Champions League team or a team that has a good chance of playing in the competition next season.
Juventus and several Premier League clubs are interested in signing him.

Palace fans’ worst fears realized?
Analysis by Sky Sports’ Nick Wright:
Crystal Palace fans are in dire straits. Minutes after announcing Marc Guehi’s departure at Friday’s press conference, Oliver Glasner confirmed his exit at the end of his contract in June. The captain and the manager, they left.
The loss of Guehi is a current concern. Palace are on a nine-game winless run ahead of their trip to Sunderland on Saturday. Now they have to go to the Stadium of Light, where the team of Regis Le Bris has never been defeated this season, without their leader and best player.
A difficult task has become more difficult as Palace try to shake off a sense of urgency following Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Macclesfield. And that’s before they consider everything else they have to come this season.
Everything looks very difficult without Guehi and now Palace fans know for sure that they will soon be without the most successful manager in their history. Glasner’s place in Palace history is guaranteed to guide them to FA Cup glory and the Community Shield. But can he get them back on track this season?
Just six weeks ago, they moved into the top four of the Premier League with their late win against Fulham. Now, they are in 13th place, looking down rather than up, and staring at a future without their captain and, soon, their manager.
