Highlights: Victor Wembanyama drops 22 points with double-double in win over Bucks

After losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Spurs returned home to face the Milwaukee Bucks. Devin Vassell is still out with his adductor injury. The competition started with the shock of Victor Wembanyama hitting his knees with Giannis Antetokounmpo. Vic would bend his knee to the floor and trudge to the locker room. However, he would return in the second quarter. After taking a 17-point lead in the second quarter, the Spurs led the Bucks 66-53 at halftime. Usually, that’s when the Spurs will let their opponents close the gap and make it a down-to-the-wire game. Except this time, the Spurs took care of business. Because of their hot shooting, they outscored the Bucks 40-16 in the third quarter and led by 39 points. The Spurs ended up winning 119-101.

Victor Wembanyama dropped a double-double: 22 points (7-12 FG, 5-6 3PT) and 10 rebounds to go along with two blocks and an assist. After the OKC game, Wemby and Keldon Johnson decided to shave their heads as a way to come together and finally focus. After surviving another injury incident, Wemby played decoy for much of the second quarter before exiting the third. He shot five threes and released outstanding plays on both sides. This was Bald Wemby’s first game, and he played as a seven-foot-five avatar.

Stephon Castle dropped a double-double: 19 points (6-9 FG, 6-6 FT) and 10 assists to go along the board and 0 turnovers. Steph played a great game as the main player for Spurs. For someone averaging 3.7 turnovers per game, Steph took care of the ball by recording his first zero-turnover game of the season. He also finished with a team-high +36. Coming into this season as a combo guard, Steph is averaging more assists than last season. His versatility and frame allow him to continue to be a combo guard, but it’s clear that the coaching staff wants him to handle the ball more than De’Aaron Fox.

De’Aaron Fox dropped 18 points (6-10 FG, 3-4 3PT), four assists, and four rebounds. Fox had a strong bounce-back game in terms of efficiency. His three balls have connected to nylon, and he seems to be embracing the off-ball guard role next to Steph. Even though he didn’t play the fourth quarter because of the score, the former Clutch Player of the Year will still be confident in running the offense.

Dylan Harper dropped 13 points, five assists, and four rebounds. The rookie continues to bounce back after a rough stretch. Dyl’s turnaround was lightning fast for the Buckeyes to handle. Not only does he move, but his posture is terrifying. Although he went from zero on five of three attempts, all three of his attempts were open shots. When that shot becomes more consistent, he has the potential to become unmanageable. However, the 19-year-old has plenty of time and will let the game come to him.

Julian Champagnie dropped a double-double: 13 points (3-5 3PT, 4-4 FT) and 11 rebounds along with a steal. Julian sank many three-pointers and got to the free throw line by drawing fouls on his three-point attempts. He even drew a bold insult to Green. Despite the score, Julian continues to sneak defensive rebounds when players are lying on the boards. His hustle and defense remain the most underrated part of his game.

All in all, this was a much needed win. As soon as Wemby returned from injury, the team’s confidence remained high and did not drop. There’s no better way to revive a shooting slump than to make the Bucks pay for defensive mistakes. The way the silver and black played in the third quarter shows how they should look at the rest of the season. Look after great leaders. The team’s chemistry continues to shine through the ups and downs, regardless of who is shaving the head. Next, back to Minnesota.
