Golden Nuggets: Which quarterback are the 49ers facing? It seems to be oblique

Kyle Shanahan shares final updates before the 49ers-Seahawks Divisional Round game
“How close is WR Jacob Cowing to being on the field?

“He’s close. He’s healthy. You know, he’s had a good two weeks and I think we’ve got a week left with him where we have to make a decision, but he looks really good out there.

The 49ers have listed Seahawks QB Sam Darnold as questionable (paywall)
“Quarterback Drew Lock reportedly took first-team snaps at his place.

Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak was asked how Darnold looked during the session, but he deferred all injury questions to head coach Mike Macdonald, who was not scheduled to speak until Friday. During the visible part of the game, Darnold did not play simultaneously.

“On routes through the air, I feel like there’s a little bit of my slant,” Darnold said Thursday. “I didn’t want to push it. It wasn’t a day to push it. It just happened. … I feel like I’ll be ready to go Saturday.”

How ’50 knives’ game prepared 49ers’ Brock Purdy for surprise test in Seattle (paywall)
“On December 15, 2022, the then-San Francisco 49ers’ linebacker received a pre-kick injection for a sprained and broken rib he sustained four days earlier and felt relief. Then on his second throw, a 4-yard completion, his body seized up.

“That throw was like, ‘Oh, man,'” Purdy recalled in 2023. “It felt like 50 knives in the same place.

49ers’ Fred Warner out vs. Seahawks; Shanahan is ‘confident’ about himself in the NFC title game (paywall)
“Shanahan responded with optimism when asked if Warner showed enough Wednesday in his solo practice this week to be confident he can be ready for the NFC Championship game.

“Yeah, I feel confident about that,” Shanahan said Thursday. “We’ll see if it works out.”

The 49ers will have to deal with a healthy Ricky Pearsall. The second-year player has said several times that he expects to play on Saturday. Getting caught? Pearsall admitted he will have to play differently to deal with a post-cruciate knee injury which he said will not heal until the end of the season.

“That’s probably the hardest part, just navigating it,” said Pearsall, who is officially considered doubtful to suit up with the Seahawks. “Some of those injuries won’t heal until I’m completely rested and done. And I can’t do that right now.”

Kawakami: Shanahan’s longevity, Purdy’s true value, and 49ers legacy in the making (paywall)
“Here’s the lasting legacy of this season for the 49ers: They’ve opened a legitimate Super Bowl window, which will be more obvious if they pull off some offensive moves.

And even with Saturday’s loss in Seattle, the 49ers have survived a number of injuries this season to allow momentum and good vibes to carry over into next season and beyond.

They have some logic here. They know it. Everyone around the league sees it. And it’s not changing anytime soon – just as it felt after losing George Kittle to an Achilles tendon in the second half of their win over Philadelphia on Sunday.

“Everything we’ve done so far will come to nothing if we don’t take advantage of this opportunity,” said Trent Williams on Wednesday about the team’s thoughts on the Eagles. “George’s spirit and energy lives on in this group.”

They got another chance on Saturday – without Kittle, Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, and many others, although it is possible that Fred Warner will be back after his serious injury in October.

The 49ers are underdogs, but they have a chance to continue this and win Super Bowl 60. If they don’t win this Super Bowl, they should and will be considered one of the favorites to win it next year or the year after. Judging by what they’ve accomplished under pressure this season, it’s possible the will he won the Super Bowl soon after in some cursed season.

The window has opened after they lost Super Bowl 58, collapsed the following year after a deluge of injuries, and restructured the roster and payroll last season.

Which makes this a good time to evaluate the legacy of senior figures in the organization. No legacies should be defined by a single win or loss, but things are changed or emphasized as seasons come and go – especially a season as meaningful as this one.
