Update: La Liga has announced that it will launch a retro collection for all clubs Thursday, March 19at Madrid Fashion Week (MBFWMadrid), brings the heritage of Spanish football to one of the leading events of the international creative industry.
After presenting the retro collection at Madrid Fashion Week, the first La Liga Retro matchday in the history of the league is expected to take place from April 10 to 13, 2026 during Matchday 31 of La Liga EA Sports and Matchday 35 of La Liga Hypermotion (second stage).

A total of 38 clubs will wear special kits inspired by iconic designs from the past. The program aims to celebrate the club’s heritage by restoring a historic look to the stadium, with a modern reinterpretation of the old jerseys.

However, FC Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano, and Getafe CF will not wear the old kits, due to “problems with preparation”, but will still participate in the matchday with other activations. Real Madrid CF will not participate in this program at all.
The retro kits will be officially launched on March 19 during Madrid Fashion Week, highlighting the link between football heritage and fashion. The referees will also join the theme by wearing a special re-inspired uniform provided by the Royal Spanish Football Federation Referees Technical Committee.
La Liga says the initiative is part of its “42 Legacies, 42 Ways of Winning” campaign, which is designed to celebrate how club identity and fan culture are passed down from generation to generation.

The idea is not new – in 2022, the president of the South American football federation, Alejandro Domínguez, proposed retro kits for the FIFA 2030 World Cup, which celebrates 100 years in 2030. In 2024, Sweden’s Allsvenskan played with retro kits.
