  • The answer is from Madonna: Madonna confirmed that she has this shirt in her stash and shared a photo of herself wearing it during the concert.

In one of the most unexpected and striking intersections between football heritage and pop culture, La Liga club Celta Vigo has recently launched a major campaign to trace some of the club’s history: the 1989-90 home shirt worn by Madonna during her iconic concert at the stadium.

For those who may need a refresher, Madonna is known worldwide as the “Queen of Pop” and remains one of the most influential cultural icons of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Celta Vigo Launches Campaign To Get Jersey Madonna Wore In 1990

Last week, the current president of Celta Vigo, Marian Mouriño Terrazoled the campaign to find this legendary jersey. Realizing the cultural weight of the image of Madonna wearing a shirt, the club took a more direct approach.

First, Celta Vigo wrote a heartfelt, official letter directly to the American singer. In the letter, the president clearly explained that he was wearing a shirt “it has become a legend now it is part of our history“, before formally asking if she still has it with him.

To make sure the message gets through to him, the club took the campaign to the pitch. During their recent match against Real Madrid, Celta’s players came out of the tunnel wearing special blue pre-match shirts with a big, bold message across the chest: “DO YOU HAVE MADONNA?“.

Known for his constant innovation and boundary-pushing music, his 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour was a global phenomenon. It was during the Spanish leg of this legendary tour, specifically on July 29, 1990, that he performed at Celta’s Estadio Municipal de Balaídos and wore the team’s blue home jersey on stage.

Madonna replied

The viral campaign worked perfectly. Catching wind of the club’s search, Madonna took to X (formerly Twitter) to give Celta Vigo fans the exact answer they’ve been waiting for.

Sharing an amazing retro photo of himself singing passionately in the 1989-90 Celta shirt, he quoted the club’s campaign and confirmed the shirt’s safety:

This shirt is hanging in my archives! Dress up and represent your team in spirit!!♥️

A Piece of History Saved

Naturally, the club was delighted with the response. The official account of Celta Vigo immediately responded to the music legend, expressing their love and saying: “Thanks for responding – and for keeping a piece of Celta history alive. Semper Madonna. Semper Celta“.

It’s very unusual to see a club go to such lengths to reconnect with a pop-culture moment from more than three decades ago, but it goes to show what these old shirts mean to the club’s identity.

What do you think of Celta Vigo’s campaign to reach Madonna? Are there any other popular pop-culture kit moments you wish clubs knew about? Let us know in the comments below!
