Super League: Warrington stop Wakefield’s fightback as St Helens cruise past Catalans | Rugby League News

Warrington Wolves held off a brave fightback from Wakefield Trinity to seal a 27-16 victory at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and maintain a positive start to the new Betfred Super League season.
After Marc Sneyd kicked a penalty to put Wolves ahead, Toafofoa Sipley rallied in the 33rd minute and put the ball down after holding it high on the line and after a lengthy review by the video referee, a try was awarded.
The visitors maintained their momentum with a second try three minutes later after Danny Walker’s break and Albert Hopoate headed in under the posts.
Just before half-time, Sipley was booked for repeated foul play and Max Jowitt kicked over the resulting penalty as Warrington led 14-2 at half-time.
Wakefield came out on top early in the second half, making their advantage count when Jake Trueman’s looping pass from the left found Jayden Myers for a corner.
But Warrington hit back when Sneyd’s kick was touched by Josh Smith before another penalty restored their lead to 22-10 just after the hour.
Trinity, however, showed great spirit to come back and with 10 minutes remaining Oliver Pratt’s try from Jack Sinfield’s kick, Jowitt converted.
Warrington finally secured victory in the 78th minute with a well-worked try when Sneyd’s free-kick towards the corner bounced off Smith and Toby King crashed over.
St Helens cruise to a big win at Perpignan
A big second half powered St Helens to a 36-4 win over Catalans Dragons in Perpignan for their second win of the season.
The first try came on 11 minutes when Shane Wright broke through the home defense before laying the ball past Daryl Clark to mark his 350th Super League appearance with the opening score.
in the evening.
Jackson Klemmer added the conversion for a 6-0 lead, and it stayed that way the entire time as the Dragons failed to capitalize on several opportunities to get on the board themselves.
However, the second half was one-way traffic as Clark picked out Jacob Host to score his second try of the afternoon in the 50th minute, and 10 minutes later Hastings found Wright who rowed over the line to score.
Clark got the fourth after Alex Walmsley put the Saints ahead, and Hasting’s fourth conversion of the afternoon made it 24-0.
The Catalans pulled one back 10 minutes from time to avoid an upset as Josh Simms broke down the left and played the ball inside for Charlie Staines to head over for a corner, but Toby Sexton missed the conversion.
The saints kept pushing. Hastings kicked a penalty with nine minutes remaining to add two points to the tally and more to come when Kyle Feldt scored two tries in the space of three minutes.
First Harry Robertson found him in the corner to force his way over the line, then at the death he leaped high to pull home Hastings’ kick to add another gloss to the scoreline.
