Review: Extending The Game with the FlashCatch Light-Up Football

We’ve all been there. You’re in the middle of a great backyard scrimmage, the score is tied, but the sun is dropping fast. Usually, once the streetlights flicker on, it’s “game over” because you can’t see the pass coming until it hits you in the face.

I recently got my hands on the FlashCatch Light Up Football (Size 6/Junior) to see if it’s actually a playable piece of equipment or just a glowing gimmick for the shelf. Here is my breakdown after tossing it around for a few nights.

The “Toy” vs. “Tool” Factor

My biggest worry with LED sports balls is always the texture. Historically, they are made of hard, slick plastic that feels terrible to throw and hurts to catch.

To my surprise, the FlashCatch actually has a composite leather feel. It’s not an NFL “Duke” leather ball, obviously, but it has genuine grip and laced stitching. You can actually throw a spiral with this thing. It doesn’t slip out of your hand the moment you try to launch a hail mary.

How It Works

The mechanics are simple and smart. There is no on/off switch you have to fumble with in the dark. It is impact-activated.

  • You snap the ball or catch it -> It lights up.
  • You set it down -> It turns off automatically after about 30 seconds.

This saves the battery life significantly. Speaking of batteries, it runs on standard watch batteries (LR44), and they actually include a spare set in the box, which is a nice touch.

Who Is This For?

This is a Size 6 (Junior) ball. It’s not a full-size pro ball, which makes it perfect for the 8-14 age range. My nephew (11 years old) could grip it easily.

If you are serious about Quarterback drills, stick to your Wilson. But if you are camping, at a beach bonfire, or just want to keep the kids (or yourself) occupied in the driveway after dinner, this is honestly a blast. The LED is bright enough to see the rotation of the ball in pitch black.

The Verdict

It is durable enough to hit the pavement (we dropped it plenty of times), and the electronics held up fine. It’s a rare case of a “cool gift” that actually functions well as sports gear.

Pros:

  • Real grip and laces (not slippery plastic).
  • Bright, impact-activated LED.
  • Comes with spare batteries and a tool to change them.

Cons:

  • Slightly heavier than a standard ball due to the battery pack (but negligible for casual play).
  • Junior size only (Size 6), so big-handed adults might find it small.
