Jaylon Tyson’s 39 points lead the Cavs to their second straight win in Philadelphia

Jaylon Tyson’s game-high 39 points helped the Cleveland Cavaliers rally by 11 points in the fourth quarter to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 117-115. Despite the incredible score, Tyson won the game by finding Evan Mobley for an easy dunk with five seconds left for the game-winning basket.

Cleveland was also shorthanded without the services of Darius Garland (toe), Sam Merrill (hand), Dean Wade (knee), and Max Strus (foot). This led to head coach Kenny Atkinson going with his first team of 23 for the season that included Craig Porter Jr. in the Garland area.

The Cavs played like a team without a starting point guard. They turned it over 12 times in the first half, which led directly to 21 points for Philadelphia. This allowed the Sixers to take a seven-point lead into halftime.

Neither team was able to score in the third quarter, but the Sixers’ strong start to the fourth pushed their lead to 11.

The Cavs fought back then. They played their best basketball of the night in a four-minute fourth quarter that saw them tie the game after a 10-0 run.

Cleveland had all the momentum with five minutes to play in the overtime game, but then threw it all away. They threw it to three straight possessions in almost the same spot as the first game. The Sixers hit each of the layups as a tie game quickly turned into a seven-point advantage for Philadelphia.

The Cavs went on a 10-2 run to take a one-point lead with two minutes left in the fourth. Both teams traded baskets in the final two minutes.

Tyrese Maxey’s layup tied the game at 115 with eight seconds left.

Atkinson called a timeout and drew a Mitchell play. When Lonzo Ball couldn’t get it all over Mitchell, he instead turned to the night’s leading scorer. Tyson immediately beat his man on the catch, drove the base, waited until the defense came to help, then made a drop-off pass to Mobley, who put the game away with a dunk.

Maxey had a chance to win the game with a desperate jumper from half court, but he couldn’t get it.

Tyson was Cleveland’s best player on Friday. He proved unable to miss from deep as he went 7-9 from outside the arc, which opened up his offensive game. Overall, Tyson connected on 13 of his 17 attempts from the field. This resulted in a career high 39 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.

The Cavs needed that kind of performance as Donovan Mitchell struggled. The Sixers double-teamed him and forced him to run the ball whenever they had the chance. This led to him finishing with only 13 points in 13 attempts to score 12 goals and six turnovers.

De’Andre Hunter had another solid performance. He scored 16 points off the bench, with seven of them coming during fourth-quarter comebacks.

Mobley scored 15 points, including three in the final 30 seconds, to seal the victory.

Tyrese Proctor was also a big contributor as he added 13 points on 5-8 shooting in 11 minutes of action. Porter dished out 11 assists and two points in the win.

The Sixers were led by Joel Embiid’s 33 points and five rebounds. Maxey had 22 points on 9-23 shooting and nine assists.

This wasn’t a great game, especially in the first half, but the Cavs found a way to dig deep and secure a hard-fought road win. They have now won three of their last four and seven of their last 10.

The Cavs will return to action on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as it will host the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder. Tip off will be at 2:30 PM.
