The Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals are both MLB franchises

Kyler Tucker, the top free agent on the market, recently signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He signed a 4-year deal that pays him $60 million a year. Just like last season, the defensive players bought the most of the All-Star team. As much as some people don’t want to admit it, MLB has a Dodgers problem. However, the Washington Nationals are also a problem for MLB.

With the CBA expiring after this season, baseball has many issues to address. They have to solve the Dodgers problem and the Nationals problem. One team is a financial powerhouse with unprecedented access to money, while the other team refuses to give away free agent contracts worth more than $15 million.

All of this divides the fans and sets the stage for the inevitable conflict at the CBA negotiating table. Fans have already accepted the news that it will be closed next year. The only question now is how long the suspension will last. I hope it doesn’t end the whole season.

It is very clear that MLB’s financial system is broken. Currently, the Dodgers pay more in luxury tax credits than 11 teams combined. On both ends of the spectrum, that’s a problem. Fans don’t want to see teams buy dominance, but they also don’t want to see other teams not trying to win at all.

This is why many fans are warming to the idea of a salary cap and a floor plan. That’s what we see in the NBA, NFL and NHL. This program works well too. We are seeing non-traditional markets succeed in a way that would never come out of MLB. In this process, the Kansas City Royals to create a dynasty would not be possible.

Some fans argue that any owner can use it like the Dodgers. Maybe that was true five or six years ago, but this simply ignores the economic reality of the situation now. Including the luxury tax, the cost to the Dodgers is over half a billion at this point. There are few teams that can maintain that level of spending.

Some fans may not want to admit it, but MLB has a major Dodgers problem. Their insane TV deal, access to international markets and an ownership group led by a hedge fund give them a status that other teams can’t compete with. This is exciting for Dodgers fans, but it’s really exciting for 29 other fans.

However, the Dodgers aren’t the only problem MLB has to deal with. The Washington Nationals represent the other side of the coin. After winning the World Series in 2019 with a top 10 salary, Nationals ownership suddenly stopped spending money.

It has gotten to the point where the Nats are one of the most economical teams in all of baseball. On the surface, it seems like the Nats’ ownership is completely out of whack. That is a problem and it divides the fans. As of the 2020-21 season, the Nats have never released a free agent worth more than $15 million. This is a slap in the face to the fans.

A salary floor is needed in this game. As smart as teams like the Brewers and Rays are, they will never overcome the Dodgers’ financial firepower. Even the big market teams are struggling to keep up with the financial Goliath that is the Los Angeles Dodgers.

When the Nats and Dodgers take the field for the Nationals’ home opener, there will be 14 players making at least $10 million. All 14 will be wearing Dodgers blue. This is just an example of a completely broken system.

Forget about owners versus players for a moment, this system is not the best deal for the consumer. Baseball is built on the backs of fans. Currently, the program does not work for fans. Only three or four teams have a chance to land real free agents. We know exactly who will win the World Series.

The CBA looms like a dark shadow over the league right now. Nobody is happy with the current situation and there is a real desire for change among the fans. The owners will be fighting for the salary cap, and for the first time in recent memory, the fans will be behind them.

However, the salary cap will not work without a floor. The Dodgers aren’t the only problem here. Teams like the Nationals are also a big problem. The Nationals are not a small market club, but the ownership spends that way. They have given up. This is not only bad for Nats fans, but for the sport as well.

The work will be suspended after this season. I hope that the fans will be considered in these discussions. I have my doubts because the chances are that the owners and players will fight for their interests. As MLB grows as a financial organization, it feels like fans are being left behind.
